Derivation: Greek achne chaff; phoros, bearing; referring to the conspicuous scales of the receptacle and of the pappus.

Description:
Perennial herb; rhizome short, vertical; leaves all radical, crowded, sheathing at the base; scapes erect, leafless, unbranched.
Capitula solitary, heterogamous, radiate; involucres broadly cup-shaped; bracts herbaceous with scarious margins, imbricate in 2 or 3 unequal series; receptacle conical, with prominent oblong scales; ray florets female, fertile, uniseriate, ligulate; style branches linear, with acute terminal appendages.
Ray achenes compressed-conical, angular; pappus uniseriate, of large scales; disk florets tubular, 5-merous, bisexual, sterile; anthers obtuse at the base, with prominent lanceolate terminal appendages; style branches almost completely fused, with subulate papillose terminal appendages; disk achenes abortive.
