Flowers bisexual or unisexual, borne in heads spikes or clusters; perianth regular, sepaloid, tubular (the tube termed a receptacular tube by some authors), with 4 lobes; stamens 2 or 8, inserted within the perianth tube; ovary superior, with 1 pendulous anatropous ovule.
Fruit (in these genera) a 1-seeded nut or occasionally drupaceous.
