Description:
Trees, shrubs, or more rarely herbaceous perennials; leaves alternate or opposite, simple or compound, gland-dotted, often producing a pleasant aroma when crushed; thorns, adjacent to buds in leaf axils, present in Eremocitrus; gland-like stipules present in some species of Eriostemon.
Inflorescences terminal, axillary or lateral (caulifloral), consisting of 1- to numerous-flowered cymose clusters (dichasia); flowers regular and mostly bisexual; sepals 4 or 5 (rarely fewer), more or less coherent at the base or united in a cup; petals 4 or 5 (rarely fewer), imbricate or valvate, generally free but fused in most species of Correa; stamens either equal in number to the petals and alternate with them, or twice as many, rarely more numerous; filaments inserted on the outer surface of a ring-like, lobed, or cushion-shaped nectar-producing disk, which is absent in Microcybe, Asterolasia and many species of Phebalium; anthers 2-celled, often apiculate, introrsely or laterally dehiscent by longitudinal slits; gynoecium superior, of 4 or 5, rarely 2 carpels, free and more or less coherent towards their bases and always united above by their simple styles, or fused completely; carpels 1-celled, with 2 (rarely 1) anatropous mostly superposed ovules.
Fruits various, often capsules consisting of 1-5 dehiscing parts (cocci) opening loculicidally (often explosively) along the inner suture, or else indehiscent berries; exocarp coriaceous; endocarp of dehiscent-fruited taxa generally splitting elastically into 2 smooth cartilagenous or horny valves; seed usually 1 per cell; endosperm generally copious (lacking in Eremocitrus); embryo generally terete; elaiosome (adhering placental portion of endocarp) present in explosively dehiscent taxa.
