Description:
Annual or perennial herbs with leaves opposite or alternate in basal rosettes.
Flowers bisexual rarely monoecious outside S. Aust., actinomorphic or almost so and borne in usually dense spikes on a usually long peduncle; sepals free or partly fused to one another and often unequal, more or less membranous with a fleshy central ridge, persistent; corolla actinomorphic, salver-shaped, membranous; stamens free, exserted, the anther with a terminal appendage; ovary superior, 2-celled or by secondary subdivision 3- or 4-celled with seeds in the upper cells retained.
Fruit a capsule by circumscissile split, rarely indehiscent outside S. Aust.; seeds with an endosperm.
