Description:
Corm 2-4-lobed, roots dichotomously branched; leaves crowning the corm, quill-like, ligulate, dilated near the base and enclosing the sporangia; sporangia large, heterosporous; megasporangia occurring towards the outside, microsporangia, if present, occurring in the inner leaves; sporangia covered by a velum or naked; megaspores large, usually white when dry, variously ornamented by tubercles, spines or ridges, more rarely almost smooth; microspores minute, smooth, tuberculate or echinate.
