Description:
Annual and perennial rhizomatous or fibrous-rooted herbs or herbs with a spherical tuber and a vertical stolon; leaves in a rosette or cauline.
Lamina with insect-catching glandular hairs, flowers regular, bisexual; sepals 4 or 5, free or almost free; petals 4 or 5, free; stamens 4 or 5, free, alternate with the petals; ovary superior, 1-celled; ovules numerous, on 2-5 parietal placentas; styles 3 or 4, simple or branched.
Fruit a loculicidal capsule with persistent calyx; seeds small, usually black, with endosperm.
