Perennial evergreen trees or shrubs, monoecious or (not in S. Aust.) dioecious; mature leaves small and scale-like, flattened for at least part of their length along the stem, opposite (not in S. Aust.) or whorled.

female cones valvate; valves fused at the base, woody at maturity, bearing 1-13 ovules each; seeds winged.

Distribution:  18 genera with about 140 species, worldwide including Australia.
