Description:
About 100 genera and up to 2,000 species almost entirely confined to the Americas.

Flowers hermaphrodite, solitary, actinomorphic, petals and stamens numerous; ovary inferior, adherent to the hollow cylindrical torus; style 1; ovules numerous, on parietal placentas.

Fruit a berry, sometimes spiny or bristly; seeds numerous, in pulp; testa mostly black.

Uses: Numerous species are cultivated as ornamentals.
