Description:
Usually perennial herbs with tuberous or rhizomatous stems; leaves usually entire, often petiolate and often with reticulate venation.

Inflorescence a spike of tightly packed small unisexual or bisexual flowers in the axil of a spathe which is sometimes large and showy; flowers with or without a perianth; ovary sessile, superior.

Distribution:  About 115 genera and 2,000 species, predominantly tropical.
