Description:
Trees or shrubs, deciduous or evergreen; leaves alternate, simple or compound, usually toothed, petiolate, exstipulate.
Flowers bisexual or unisexual, regular, in many-flowered panicles; sepals usually 5, free or fused; petals usually 5, usually free; stamens usually 10 but some sometimes sterile; filaments free; anthers dehiscing longitudinally, 2-locular; ovary superior, 1-celled, surrounded at the base by a disk, with 1 ovule; styles 1-3.
Fruit a drupe; seeds usually without endosperm.
